About

The Kwamaiko Women's Self-Help Group (KWSHG) was established with the primary mission of providing support to single women residing in and around Kwamaiko Village. The organization is dedicated to the introduction of small-scale women-centric projects designed to enable single mothers to generate a sustainable income through small-scale farming endeavors. Our collaborative efforts extend to partnering with seasoned farmers within the region, focusing on the holistic education of girls, empowerment of women, and the transformation of communities.

Over the years, substantial evidence has demonstrated the substantial advantages associated with the active involvement of women in community development. These advantages encompass higher income levels, improved working conditions, and meaningful participation in decision-making processes. Central to achieving these aspirations is the pivotal role of education in equipping women and girls with the skills and knowledge required to attain these objectives.

Kwamaiko Village, situated approximately 36 kilometers from Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya, is a small community with an estimated population of around 20,000 residents. Notably, Kwamaiko stands out as one of the more modestly-sized villages in Kenya. Distinct characteristics of the village include its sparse population and limited shopping opportunities. Traditional barter markets still prevail, emphasizing the exchange of food and goods among community members. The scarcity of formal employment opportunities has resulted in considerable economic challenges, prompting many individuals to seek better job prospects in urban centers. Consequently, there has been a significant migration from the village to urban areas, leading to intra-family disputes and separations.

Within Kwamaiko Village, there exists a notable demographic of single mothers, many of whom have been compelled to separate from their spouses due to domestic violence or have been widowed as a result of illness. It is in response to these pressing challenges that the KWSHG was established, with the overarching goal of offering support and assistance to single women residing within and in the vicinity of Kwamaiko Village. The inability to cover daily necessities, rent, and school-related expenses, including uniforms and books, often plunges these women and their children into an inescapable cycle of poverty. Through our endeavors, we aim to break this cycle and offer these women the resources and support necessary to secure a brighter future for themselves and their families.
